( My interpretation - the bullet entered the right side of the head ( cracked the skull ) sprang open the bone visible in the autopsy photos above, deflected off the skull towards the back of the head, creating the large Exit Wound or Defect in the Back of the Head. )

( Apparently when that bone flap was put back in place it was difficult to tell that there was a wound there at all, And Very Possibly was held in place by Mrs. Kennedy on the way to the Hospital. )

According to one wittiness that was present at the autopsy Paul O'connor, who was a laboratory technologist at Bethesda:
"When I first saw the pictures of the Presidents body so-called wounds, what really struck me was especially the head wound, they showed a nice little neat round bullet hole in the back of his head, when actually what I saw was the whole side of his head blowing off, IT WAS GONE."

Among O'connor's duties that night was to remove the brain.

"What struck me was when we removed the sheet (over the head) I looked down, I said My God He didn't have any brains left, literally, I was just astounded by it, I think everybody else was too because there was just a gasp throughout the room, there was no brain to be removed at all."
 

Supposable the brain was removed, but came up missing and has never been accounted for:

Q: Had any work been done on President Kennedy's body in regard to the performing of the autopsy by the time you got there?
A: As I recall, the brain had been removed. Dr. Humes told me that to remove the brain he did not have to carry out the procedure you carry out when there is no wound in the skull. The wound was of such an extent, over five inches in diameter, that it was not of a great difficulty for him to remove this brain, and this is the best of my recollection.

A. I was.
Q. Did anyone else assist you with that?
A. Maybe J. I'm not sure now. I mean, it's not a two-man job particularly. You have to cut across the top of the spinal cord, of the medulla to--you know, you just make one incision. I mean, it's not a major thing for a lot of people to be involved with.

A. I don't know. I don't really--can't really recall why.
Q. Was the fresh brain weighed?
A. I don't recall. I don't recall. It's as simple as that.
Q. Would it be standard practice for a gunshot wound in the head to have the brain weighed?
A. Yeah, we weigh it with gunshot wound or no. Normally we weigh the brain when we remove it. I can't recall why--I don't know, one, whether it was weighed or not, or, two, why it doesn't show here. I have no explanation for that.

In an affidavit and interview with Dr. Burkley, he informed the committee that shortly after this supplemental examination of the organs and brain, he directed the Bethesda Naval Hospital to transfer all the physical autopsy material in its possession to Bouck at the Executive Office Building. (33) Dr. Burkley stated further that Captain Stover gave him the brain in a white granite or stainless steel bucket and that he personally transferred it to the White House where it was placed in a locked Secret Service file cabinet.

Bouck corroborated this transfer in a memorandum dated April 26, 1965, in which he asserted that:
[s]hortly after the assassination of President Kennedy, Adm. George C. Burkley delivered to this section certain specimens, photographs, and documents relating to the autopsy.

Dr. Burkley clarified this issue, saying that the stainless steel container mentioned in the inventory held the brain and that he saw the bucket in April 1965

The memorandum also noted that after discovering in October 1966 that these items were missing, Archives personnel conducted a careful search but could not determine their location.

The last date these items were accounted for was the April 26, 1965 transfer of the autopsy materials to Lincoln.
